At YMCA Leicestershire, we believe that every young person has the potential to overcome challenges and transform their lives. Emily’s journey with us is a powerful example of how resilience, support, and encouragement can guide someone through their toughest times and into a future full of hope, independence, and personal growth.
When Emily first moved into the YMCA, she was understandably apprehensive. “Moving into the YMCA was very scary at first, but quickly it was really welcoming,” she recalls. Emily was going through some incredibly difficult times in her life, facing not just emotional and physical struggles but also the burden of uncertainty about her future. But from the moment she arrived, she found herself surrounded by support and kindness from staff who were there for her every step of the way.
“They really did save me from a lot of stuff going on, mentally, physically, everything. I think there’s a lot of life lessons to learn as well. I feel like they helped me be more independent, and I made a lot of friends,” Emily says. At YMCA Leicestershire, we work hard to create an environment where young people feel valued, safe, and empowered to thrive, just as Emily did.
Emily’s journey wasn’t without its setbacks. A major turning point came when she was diagnosed with epilepsy, which impacted both her physical health and her mental well-being. “I didn’t know who I was. I had to leave college because I couldn’t be present with my course, and that really affected my mental health,” Emily shares.
Despite these challenges, she found the strength to push forward. With the right treatment, Emily’s seizures eventually stopped, and she was able to regain control over her life.
Through it all, YMCA Leicestershire remained a constant source of support. “Living at the YMCA, I would say, is the best thing that could have happened to me,” she says. “If you’re struggling, this is a good place to come to. I like to educate people on understanding what it’s like, because a lot of people don’t understand what it’s like to be homeless or without a family, a guardian, or anyone looking out for you.”
This insight highlights the importance of community and the role we play in providing not just a roof over someone’s head but a place where young people can build a foundation for their future. Emily’s story reminds us that with the right guidance and support, young people can overcome even the most difficult of circumstances.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Emily’s journey is how she turned her life around and took bold steps toward her future. “I decided to apply for the BA course at De Montfort University,” she explains. “When I got in, my mood just lifted up a lot.”
The support she received from YMCA Leicestershire was instrumental in helping her achieve this goal. Our staff worked with Emily to secure accommodation and assist with the financial aspects of university life, ensuring that she had everything she needed to succeed.
When it came time for Emily to move on, the kindness continued. “When I was leaving, I got cutlery, plates, and a crochet blanket from this lovely woman, Rosie. It’s on my sofa, and I love it.” Small gestures like these are a reflection of the care and compassion we show our young residents.
Even now, as Emily embarks on this exciting new chapter, the YMCA is still there for her. “YMCA have already asked me if I need anything, like support with mental health. They’d be happy to help. It’s just very nice of them, and I appreciate that a lot,” she says.
Emily’s transformation is nothing short of inspiring. “I didn’t think I’d make it this far. A lot happened, so for me to even get on the course, it was like a magic change for me,” she reflects.
This moment is a testament to Emily’s determination and the impact of the support she received at YMCA Leicestershire. It’s a reminder that no matter how difficult life may seem at times, with the right support, anything is possible.
“I am proud of myself, and the staff make sure that I am,” Emily says, and we couldn’t be more proud of her.
Emily’s story is just one example of the many young people whose lives have been transformed with the help of YMCA Leicestershire. We are committed to helping young people build resilience, gain independence, and unlock their full potential, no matter what challenges they face.
